About Our Name
Sundogs are a natural phenomenon of the atmosphere accompanying halos around the Sun and the Moon. Sundogs and halos can be seen at any time of the year but are much more frequent in the winter months. They are caused by ice crystals in the Earth's atmosphere. These transient features require the presence of cirrostratus clouds which are thin, milky sheets of cloud that veil the sky but allow the Sun and the Moon to shine through.

They consist of tiny ice crystals which act as prisms to refract (bend) sunlight at one specific angle, 22 degrees, which creates a halo 44 degrees in diameter. At 180 degree and occasionally at 90 degree intervals around the halo, the effect is particularly intense and it appears as a diffuse circle of light positioned on the halo...these intense spots are the sundogs.

Another natural phenomenon associated with winter which has also been named Sundogs is the team of enthusiastic huskies which pad the trails along the southern edge of the boreal forest and provide transportation and enjoyment for people discovering this environment.
