Preparing For Your Excursion NEW 2021
Knowing what to expect and how to prepare is important for enjoyable, safe winter experiences. We've given you some tips, information on these pages.

Physical Ability of Participants
No mushing experience is required. While physical ability is not a major limiting factor on most trips, the activity can be physically demanding. Exposure to cold temperatures can be tiring. The fitter a participant is the more likely they will be prepared to help handle and mush a team.

Participants may have to help hold team lines or anchor a snow hook from time to time and must be able to get in and out of the sled bag on their own.

Please notify us of any medical conditions or special dietary needs of which you believe we should be aware.

Participants must read and sign a Waiver of Indemnity and Assumption of Risk.

Dress Warmly
Winter outdoor excursions accented by crisp air and rosy cheeks are memorable ones but your outing will be most enjoyable if you're not distracted by the cold.
Dress using the 'layering' concept. Wear wicking, synthetic fibres, poly-polar fleece or even better, the natural fibres of wool, especially merino wool, are super to help keep you warm-m-m. The thicker the insulation, generally the warmer.

Wear cotton socks or cotton underwear, shirts or track pants only if you want to be c-c-c-c-o-l-ld! Cotton quickly loses insulation value when damp. Otherwise, put away all your cotton stuff until spring.

Keep in mind the breeze on a dog sled run makes things a bit cooler. Have not only a good layer of insulation but good windproofing on top and bottom, such as parka and snow pants. Blue jeans or other cotton pants are not-recommended.(*see above)

Your headgear should easily cover your forehead and ears. A face toque or balaclava are good choices. Felt-pack style boots and wool socks and warm mitts (not gloves) are recommended. Wear a thin, wool or synthetic fleece liner glove under your mitts so when you take your mitts off to harness or handle dogs your fingers stay warmer.

Unless stated in the package description, the participant is responsible for their own clothing. We can provide an equipment and clothing list in advance for longer trips.

What We Provide
Participants ride the sled in a wind-resistant sled bag and are provided insulated seat cushions and a quilted, sleeping bag-type comforter which may be used if desired. If we outfit you with outer wear such as parka, pants or boots, there is an additional cost. Please inquire.

We have a small, heated day-cabin at our trailhead by the dog yard. It’s for changing, warming up and anyone in your group not going on an excursion or waiting for their dogteam is welcome to use it. It is equipped with an indoor, composting toilet.

Outdoor toilet facilities are provided at Sundogs backcountry camp. There is no running water at either the trailhead or backcountry camp.

Winter Weather In The Boreal Forest
Temperatures at anytime throughout the winter in northern Saskatchewan can range from +5C to -40C. Daytime temperatures are not necessarily much higher than overnight lows. The air is usually quite dry making colder temperatures somewhat more manageable.

Snow cover is highly variable and a continuous cover suitable for dog sledding can arrive as early as October but by mid-December is more usual. We make no guarantees that snow and trails conditions will be suitable at the time of your visit. Trails usually melt out by the middle to end of March.

Hours of daylight in mid-December number about 8 gradually increasing to about 12 by the end of the mushing season.Waiver_Form.htmlWaiver_Form.htmlshapeimage_3_link_0shapeimage_3_link_1
